The Sternreiter movement (left) has solid brass movement plates,
brass gears, and steel shafts and pivots. Most
clockmakers stopped using these materials in the 1950s because
it was too expensive in a competitive market.
Other than Sternreiter clocks, the movements today are made like
the one on the right above. The plates are thin
aluminum. The gears are nylon. When a nylon gear
breaks, you throw the clock away. Sterneiter makes
a clock you can maintain and give to your grandchildren.
On these pages you
will find the latest available mechanical alarm clocks, as
well as quartz and electric clocks designed in the
classic styles of the alarm clocks of yesterday and the modern
designs and conveniences of today.
