In it's day, the Ansonia Clock Company was
the premier clock maker in the US. Considered by most
to be the
Cadillac of clocks, they made surprisingly few
alarm clocks. This is most likely because they used
the same quality of materials as they did in their wall and
mantle clocks. They could not compete on price as well
as other manufacturers.
This is the "Startle" model. I have not
found it in any Ansonia reference material, but based on
similar models with similar features, I date this one
between 1894 and 1910. The alarm features a
"repetition" setting and "constant" setting. The
"repetition" setting works like the repeat setting for Big
Bens, where the alarm starts and stops if not shut off.
LOUD ticking sound. LOUD alarm.
The
clock is 5 1/8" tall. The dial is 3 7/8" in
diameter.
